Words based on Matthew 20:20-23, 27:55-56 Katy Wehr's Note: Christ’s disciples were expecting an earthly, political Kingdom and so I tried to evoke a Medieval courtly dance and used a ballad form where a line gets added every verse. Since Salome was also at the foot of the Cross, I imagined her being bewildered and stretched in her expectations. The poetic turn of the song is borrowed from Dorothy L. Sayers’ "The Man Born to be King" where the request is made by John (see Mark 10:35-40) who later stands at the foot of the Cross and says, “we refused the cup and the baptism, not knowing what we asked, and the places on your right hand and on your left hand have been given to these two thieves.”

Here's a challenge for any Koine Greek students out there: Can you compare my text with Matthew 15:22,28 & Mark 10:47,51-52 to see how I adjusted each text to make them fit the music and work slightly better in parallel?

This song helps us imagine ourselves present with the grieving women followers of Jesus, who have just seen Him crucified and now prepare the customary preparations for a proper burial. Special thanks to Eleanor Carlson as art director and to Nola Nelson and Lindsey Deakins for ‘lending a hand.’ In writing the song, Katy Wehr imagined the myrrhbearers consoling each other by singing a well known text from Song of Songs 8, which seems both mournful and hopeful here. When the Babylonian (Enuma Elish) and Hebrew creation stories are told together it shows the deep theological meaning of Genesis 1: God is in control, God can create by His words and God absolutely loves everything that He has made - including human beings. We were not created to be slaves of the gods, but to be God's image-bearers in the world. We are His precious creations. Kathryn Wehr, PhD created this story for her theology class at North Central University. She would pass out shakers, bells and other sound effect-makers and get the whole class involved making water sounds, etc. Katy is pleased to collaborate here with two college students: Clarinetist Claire Zwiefelhofer and Photographer Patrick Wehr (her nephew). The hymn tune at the end of the video is a traditional Welsh tune known as Ash Grove to which the text "Let All Things Now Living" is sung.
